Overview

Ionian clarity, wrecks, islands, and UNESCO history on Albania's southern edge

Saranda and Ksamil combine easy Mediterranean beach travel with a surprisingly varied underwater scene. Saranda works as the logistics hub, with the port, dive operators, seafront hotels, and onward links from Corfu or Tirana. Ksamil adds postcard shallows, island swims, and access to intentionally sunk wrecks and reef lines near Butrint. For divers, the draw is a mix of beginner-friendly summer conditions, photogenic wrecks such as SS Probitas, and clear-water reef diving that fits well into short boat days. For non-divers, Butrint's UNESCO-listed ruins, the Blue Eye spring, beaches, and hilltop sunsets make this one of the best mixed-group bases on the Albanian Riviera.

What Makes It Special

  • Fast Access

You can reach the core area either overland from Tirana or via Corfu airport plus ferry, which is often the fastest international route.

  • Wreck and Reef Variety

Within a short boat radius you can combine shallow reef structure, caves, and signature wrecks from about 3 m to 30 m.

  • Mixed-Group Winner

Non-divers can spend the same week between Butrint, the Blue Eye spring, beach clubs, island swims, and Lekursi sunsets.

  • Protected Nature and Heritage

The nearby Butrint National Park and UNESCO World Heritage setting add wildlife, wetlands, and strong heritage rules that make trips feel broader than a simple beach town escape.
