What It Feels Like

Sesimbra is Lisbon's closest serious dive base: a sheltered working harbor, quick boat rides, and access to the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park along the Arrabida-Espichel coast.

Build your trip around a mix of reef structure and wreck history. Start with shallower sites like Pedra Do Leao for comfort and buoyancy, then step up to Cape Espichel profiles such as the River Gurara Proa (Wreck).

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Pedra Do Leao

Classic rocky reef with a wide depth range from {{ 4 | distance:m }} to {{ 13 | distance:m }}, making it useful for skills, photography, and relaxed dives.

  • Jardim das Gorgonias

Named for gorgonian gardens and the kind of textured rock that rewards slow finning and good trim.

Advanced

  • River Gurara Proa (Wreck)

    A flagship Sesimbra wreck segment with a deeper profile around {{ 28 | distance:m }}.

  • River Gurara Popa (Wreck)

The companion stern section to the Gurara dive, typically a bit shallower around {{ 23 | distance:m }}.

  • Batelao

A shallow, approachable wreckstyle site that works well for check dives, training, and photographers who like structure without a demanding profile.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

  • Most dives run as short boat trips from Sesimbra harbor.
  • The Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park is zoned; recreational diving is allowed, but organized groups can require permission. Your dive operator typically handles this.
  • Build in flexibility. If the Cape Espichel side is rough, ask for a protected-bay plan.
  • Bring or rent an SMB and know how to deploy it.
  • Plan exposure protection for Atlantic water. Many divers are happiest in a 5mm to 7mm suit outside peak summer.

Conditions Fallback

  • Build in flexibility. If the Cape Espichel side is rough, ask for a protected-bay plan.

Avoid

  • Do not ignore atlantic swell and surge advisories from local operators.
