Overview
Ustica is a compact volcanic island north of Palermo where protected Mediterranean water, basalt walls, shoals, wreckage, caves, and archaeological routes sit within short boat range of one harbor. Its marine protected area dates to 1986 and covers more than 15,000 hectares, supporting Posidonia meadows, groupers, barracuda, amberjacks, tuna, octopus, and spiny lobsters. Scuba is the main draw, but supervised freediving and guided seawatching make the island useful for mixed water-sport groups. The dependable visitor season runs from May through October, with July and September offering the strongest balance of warmth, active services, and marine-life potential. Ustica is not a liveaboard destination: plan a land stay, use an authorized local operator, and keep the Palermo ferry connection flexible around weather.
