Dive-site guide for Maroubra Magic Point terrain, visibility, conditions, sources, and planning notes.
Magic Point
Sydney boat dive with grey nurse sharks, caves, and rocky reef.
Local operator required
A Sydney dive boat or experienced local operator is strongly recommended for site positioning, shark-habitat etiquette, weather calls, and safe pickup.
About Magic Point
Magic Point is a boat-access shark dive off Maroubra, where a low rocky wall, boulder fields, sand edges, and small caves form one of Sydney's best-known grey nurse shark sites. Divers come for calm observation of sharks around the cave area, with wobbegongs, Port Jackson sharks, horn sharks, weedy seadragons, blue groper, schooling fish, and temperate reef life adding interest across the reef. The site rewards controlled buoyancy, respectful wildlife distance, and close attention to the boat crew's plan because it sits in open coastal water and protected shark habitat.

Magic Point Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
8m - 24m
Depth Note
Dive profiles commonly describe shallow anchor or reef starts around 8 m, a wall and cave zone around 15 m, and sand-line or deeper reef sections around 24 m.
Best Season
Sydney diving is possible year-round, with calmer windows and better visibility often occurring outside strong swell or runoff periods; operators decide trips by forecast.
Typical Conditions
Expect temperate water, rocky reef terrain, caves or overhangs, moderate boat logistics, and visibility that can be good on settled days but reduced by swell or silt.
Safety & Access At Magic Point
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Keep respectful distance from grey nurse sharks, never block cave entrances, and avoid touching, chasing, feeding, or crowding wildlife. Follow the skipper and guide's entry, exit, depth, and surfacing plan, and carry an SMB when required.
Access Restrictions
Magic Point is normally run by local dive boats from Sydney operators. Access depends on sea state, operator scheduling, diver certification, and protected-area rules.
Legal Notes
Magic Point is within NSW grey nurse shark critical habitat. Follow current NSW fisheries closures, threatened-species protections, no-take rules where applicable, and operator wildlife-interaction briefings.

Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
Best as a guided boat dive for certified divers comfortable with open-water boat procedures, temperate exposure protection, controlled buoyancy near caves, and calm shark encounters.
Freedive
Freediving is not the usual access model because the shark area is offshore, boat-managed, and tied to protected-habitat procedures.
Snorkel
Magic Point is not a practical snorkel site for most visitors because the main reef and shark area are offshore and exposed.
