Boat-accessed arch and cave site with rocky shelves and coral beds; winter brings clearer water and grey nurse sharks.

About Moon Island

Moon Island is a boat-accessed offshore rock off Swansea with arches, caves, rocky shelves, and driftable rock faces. Coral beds and mixed reef life make it a versatile dive, and winter is the classic season for grey nurse sharks, with seals, weedy seadragons, nudibranchs, and eels also turning up. It is a compact but varied NSW dive that works well as a guided circuit when conditions are calm.

Scuba Diving

A circuit of arches, caves, rocky shelves, and drift lines, with the Arch and Temple among the better-known routes.

Freediving

Only the shallowest rocky shelves are reasonable for expert freedivers; the arch and cave circuit is mainly a scuba route.

Snorkeling

The surface can be scenic, but the main arches, caves, and shark-watching areas are too deep for a useful snorkel.
