Boat access and current management make this a better fit with a local guide or operator.
About Barge Reef
Barge Reef is a drift dive along Guam's breakwater where barges were dropped during construction in the 1940s, and the wreckage now holds reef growth, sponges, and fish life. The site feels like a moving line along structure rather than a fixed coral garden. Expect colorful soft and hard corals, elephant ear sponges, reef fish, turtles, eels, and octopus around the barge structure. It suits divers who are comfortable with boat access and current and want a photogenic artificial-reef feel.

Safety & Access At Barge Reef
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Plan for current along the breakwater, stay with the group, and keep buoyancy tight around the wreckage and sponges. It is not a casual calm-water reef cruise.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only; current can strengthen quickly along the breakwater and the site is not a good fit for low-experience shore entry.
Legal Notes
Follow harbor and operator guidance and avoid treating the wreckage like a casual shore-access site.
Local Intel For Barge Reef
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
A drift dive along the breakwater between named points, following wreckage structure.
Freedive
Not a freedive-first site; the drift profile and current are better suited to scuba than to casual breath-hold use.
Snorkel
Not recommended as a snorkel site because the water movement and boat-access profile are what define the dive.
