Blue Maomao Arch (Bay of Islands)
A small, sheltered bay surrounded by rocky reef, featuring a shallow arch and a seabed that drops away along the contour into deeper water. The area has lots of boulders with many small holes and crevices to explore. The bottom is generally kelp-covered, with patches of kina barrens and schools of fish commonly seen around the reef structure.
Depth note
The arch is shallow (less than 5 m), and the bottom contour can be followed to 30+ m.
Typical conditions
Sheltered bay with rocky reef; kelp bottom with some kina barrens.
Hazards
Safety notes
The arch creates an overhead environment; maintain appropriate clearance and buoyancy control. Depth increases beyond 30 m along the contour, so monitor depth and gas closely.
Tailored notes for different activities.
Scuba
Shallow arch area transitions to deeper diving by following the bottom contour past 30 m, with boulders and crevices throughout.
