Calypso Bay
Quiet wall-and-kelp bay dive at the Poor Knights.
About Calypso Bay
Calypso Bay is a quieter Poor Knights wall dive where a steep volcanic face dressed in encrusting life gives way to boulders, kelp, and a sandy finish. It suits divers who want a more relaxed circuit than the reserve's high-energy arches and channels, while still offering photogenic walls, colourful invertebrates, and passing schools in clear offshore water.

Calypso Bay Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
15m - 30m
Depth Note
Wall transitions into a bouldery kelpy slope from about 15 m down to the sand line around 30 m.
Best Season
Calypso Bay can be dived year-round. Winter generally brings the clearest water across the Poor Knights, while late summer to early autumn usually offers the warmest temperatures.
Typical Conditions
Expect offshore island conditions with generally clear water, a straightforward wall that becomes a bouldery kelp slope, and a calmer feel than the reserve's more exposed arches and channels. Visibility across the Poor Knights is commonly in the 15-30 m range, with weather and plankton cycles affecting each trip.
Safety & Access At Calypso Bay
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Safety Notes
This is an offshore boat dive in a protected reserve, so conditions are still weather-dependent even when the bay is chosen as a calmer option. Depth increases progressively down the wall and slope, and divers should follow skipper briefings, stay aware of gas and no-decompression limits, and avoid contact with the wall and kelp-covered boulders.
Access Restrictions
Calypso Bay is reached by boat, usually from Tutukaka Marina. Landing on the islands or tying boats to the shoreline is prohibited throughout the reserve.
Legal Notes
The Poor Knights are a fully protected marine reserve. No fishing, collecting, disturbing marine life, taking rocks or shells, or feeding fish is allowed.
