Tie Dye Arch: exposed Poor Knights swim-through for calm days
Tie Dye Arch: exposed Poor Knights swim-through for calm days
Tie Dye Arch is a colourful boat-dive swim-through on the exposed Pinnacles side of the Poor Knights Marine Reserve. On calm days, the split entrance, encrusted walls, and boulder-strewn floor make it a strong route for photographers and fish watchers, with schools of maomao, kingfish, rays, eels, and the occasional seal.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
16m - 25m
Depth Note
The arch floor is reported around 16 m, while the larger cavern feature is described at about 25 m.
Best Season
Winter and other settled-weather windows.
Typical Conditions
Flat seas, light wind, and low swell are the usual green lights; visibility is best on clear winter windows.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Plan for an overhead swim-through with some current, and keep one clear exit in mind. Calm water and careful buoyancy matter more than speed here.
Access Restrictions
Accessible only on days with minimum wind and swell.
Legal Notes
The site sits inside the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, so no fishing, collecting, landing, or fish feeding is allowed, and boats must follow marine reserve rules.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Scuba divers usually work the arch as a controlled swim-through, using the cleaner side of the structure for entry and exit. Slow down in the boulders and arch walls, where the best fish action often gathers.
Freediving
Not a primary freedive site. Boat access, overhead geometry, and exposure make it a better fit for scuba than casual apnea unless conditions are exceptionally calm and the team is experienced.
Snorkeling
Only a secondary snorkel option. Very calm water can make the outer structure interesting from the surface, but the site is much better suited to scuba and operator-led boat days.
