Eastern Arch trip report describing wildlife and exposed surface conditions.
Open-ocean archway dive on Poor Knights' eastern edge.
Open-ocean archway dive on Poor Knights' eastern edge.
Eastern Arch is an advanced Poor Knights wall-and-arch dive where a kelp-framed western entrance leads into steep sponge-coated walls and a more exposed blue-water exit on the outer side of the islands. The site is prized for dramatic structure rather than easy shelter. Divers usually work the line the skipper chooses for the day, watching for nudibranchs, moray eels, schooling fish, and passing rays as the arch opens toward the open ocean.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
18m - 40m
Depth Note
Western entrance is around 18 m; eastern end drops vertically into 40 m+.
Best Season
Late summer through autumn is commonly favored for warmer water and reliable boat days, while settled winter periods can bring the clearest water.
Typical Conditions
Usually dived in clear blue water with kelp near the entrance, sponge and invertebrate growth on the walls, and more water movement toward the seaward mouth.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Includes an overhead arch and a steep drop-off into deeper water; appropriate training and depth management are important.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only within a fully protected marine reserve; operators choose whether the exposed outer-island conditions are suitable on the day.
Legal Notes
Eastern Arch lies inside the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve and Nature Reserve, where fishing and collecting are prohibited and public landings are generally restricted without a permit.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
A wall-and-arch dive starting around 18 m and progressing to a vertical drop into 40 m+ with an open-ocean outlook.
Freediving
Not a typical freedive site. The exposed outer-island setting, boat logistics, and advanced underwater terrain make it better suited to scuba-led runs.
Snorkeling
Generally unsuitable for casual snorkeling because the site is boat-only, exposed, and planned around advanced diving conditions rather than easy surface shelter.
