Sheltered Wellington Harbour shore dive with wharf remains and macro life.
Sheltered Wellington Harbour shore dive with wharf remains and macro life.
Mahanga Bay is a sheltered Wellington Harbour shore dive on the Miramar Peninsula, where old wharf remains, mussel lines, weed edges, gravel, sand, and scattered artefacts create an easy navigation and training site. Divers can look for seahorses, pipefish, octopus, stargazers, sole, paddle crabs, masking crabs, leatherjackets, sponges, anemones, and harbour fish while exploring slowly close to shore. It is generally approachable, but cold water, low visibility, silt, fishing activity, and recreational water-quality notices should be checked before entering.

Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Use a dive flag, protect against cold water, control silt, watch for fishing lines and boat activity, and check local water-quality status before diving.
Access Restrictions
Access is from shore where parking and conditions allow, but divers should respect local closures, construction, water-quality alerts, and harbour activity.
Legal Notes
Follow New Zealand marine rules, local council water-quality advice, dive-flag requirements, and no-take or heritage guidance where applicable.

Scuba Diving
A practical shore dive for training, macro photography, night dives, and low-stress navigation when visibility and water quality are acceptable.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is possible close to shore in calm clear water, but the wharf remains, mussel lines, and macro subjects are better on scuba.
