Local operator required
A local operator is the practical way to manage boat logistics, sea-state checks, and reserve access.
Boat-access marine reserve off Sao Miguel and Santa Maria with exposed water, strong currents, and big-fish action.
About Formigas
Formigas is a remote offshore Azores reserve of volcanic islets, reef patches, steep walls, and a wreck option that draws pelagic fish, rays, and other large marine life. Boat access, sea-state windows, and strong currents make it a better fit for experienced divers than casual day-trippers, but the payoff is a true open-ocean reserve with big-water energy.

Safety Notes
Some dives reach 30–50 m and the area is described as having shark encounters; plan depth limits and procedures accordingly.
Access Restrictions
Experienced divers only. Some operators require advanced certification, good buoyancy control, and a coastal checkout before the offshore trip.
Legal Notes
The islets sit inside a protected nature reserve and marine protected area, so reserve rules and operator instructions apply.
