A local guide is strongly recommended the first time because entry, exit, and timing are site-specific.

Entry is the test here: shore access, surf timing, and cut-through navigation matter more than the underwater route once you're through.

About Asan Cut

Asan Cut is Guam's classic cut-through-the-reef shore dive: hard coral outcrops and rock columns framing a sandy channel with enough relief to keep the route interesting. The open-water side can pull you toward deeper water, while the entry side is the real challenge. It is best suited to confident divers who can manage a surf-sensitive beach entry, read the current, and stay close to the site on the way in and out. Once through the cut, the reef pays off with a mix of fish, wreck history, and a more open run toward the outside.

Safety & Access At Asan Cut

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Strong currentSurgeWaves

Safety Notes

Treat the entry and exit as the hazard, not the reef itself. Only dive on calm, low-swell days with slackish tides, and be ready to abort if the cut is running.

Access Restrictions

Shore entry only works in very calm conditions; surf, tide changes, and rip currents can make the cut unsafe.

Legal Notes

Use the public beach access carefully, keep clear of anglers, and follow any park or surf warnings for the Asan shoreline.

Local Intel For Asan Cut

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

Includes a WWII landing craft wreck in roughly 60 ft (β‰ˆ18 m) of water.

Freedive

Only confident freedivers should consider it, and only on very calm days. The cut and surge make it much less forgiving than a typical reef snorkel site.

Snorkel

Not a casual snorkel site. Snorkeling is only reasonable in very calm weather near the protected edges and should not be attempted if the cut is running.
