Overview

Monsoon-green Arabia topside, shallow wrecks and reefs underwater

Dhofar is Oman's wild south: a monsoon-shaped coastline where Salalah's lagoons and beaches sit under the Dhofar Mountains, and Mirbat's bays hide shallow reefs, two local wrecks, and even seasonal kelp. In the dry season (roughly October to May), boat diving and snorkeling out of Mirbat can be approachable and photogenic, with many sites in the 8 m to 30 m range and frequent turtles, rays, cuttlefish, lobsters, and morays. Summer brings the Khareef monsoon (June to September): seas often turn rough and many Mirbat dive centers close, but topside becomes magical with mist, green hills, waterfalls, and dramatic blowholes. Use Salalah as the flight hub and food base, then position in Mirbat for early boats, or add a liveaboard to the Hallaniyat Islands for true expedition diving.

What Makes It Special

  • Seasonal duality

Plan two different Dhofar trips: Khareef (Jun to Sep) for green mountains and mist, and Oct to May for the best water time.

  • Shallow wreck diving

China Wreck sits around 8 m and the Marriott Wreck around 12 m, making them approachable sites with high fish density.

  • Rare kelp habitat

Some sheltered bays around Hinu Bay support a seasonal kelp forest feel alongside rays, turtles, and nudibranchs.

  • UNESCO culture nearby

The Land of Frankincense World Heritage property (including Al Baleed and Sumhuram) turns a dive trip into a culture and history trip.
