Lava reefs, archaeological dives and two marine parks under Etna's skyline
Overview
Eastern Sicily rewards divers who treat the coast as a four-cluster journey rather than one resort. Taormina and Isola Bella deliver accessible boat dives on walls, grottoes and archaeological remains. Aci Castello and Aci Trezza add black-lava reefs inside the Cyclops Islands Marine Protected Area. Syracuse provides Ortigia's culture, while nearby Plemmirio brings limestone walls, caves, a submerged aircraft and tightly managed Zone A routes. Most trips are land based, with local day boats and occasional shore entries. May through October is the easiest overall window, although selected Plemmirio sites operate in suitable winter weather. The destination works especially well for mixed groups because Ancient Greek theatres, Mount Etna, Baroque towns, fishing villages and reserve walks can fill every non-diving day. The planning tradeoff is logistics: two accommodation bases, advance operator coordination and separate marine-park rules produce a much stronger trip than trying to commute the entire coast each morning.
Taormina, the Cyclops Islands, Syracuse and Plemmirio create a progressive itinerary rather than repeated versions of the same reef.
Black basalt walls and lava formations in the north contrast with pale limestone caves, arches and drop-offs in Plemmirio.

Published zoning, mooring and authorization systems protect the Cyclops Islands and Plemmirio, while requiring deliberate advance planning.
