Season planner for Fernando de Noronha

Temperatures in Fernando de Noronha barely move across the year, hovering around 29°C in the day and 23°C at night. What matters is the balance between rain, wind and swell. The classic dry season runs roughly from August to January, with lower rainfall and crisper visibility underwater. The rainy season from February to July brings heavier showers and more humidity, especially from March to May, but water stays warm and many dives still run. Surf season overlaps the start of the year, with larger north and northwest swells from December to March.

Ideal: Driest weather, generally calm Inner Sea, excellent beach days and water around 28°C.

Plan Carefully: Rainiest months, with {{ 200 | precipitation:mm }} plus in April and May on average, more wind and cloud but still warm water and good diving when boats run.

Brazilian school holidays in January and July and national holidays push prices and availability.

Ideal: Stable tradewinds, low rainfall and some of the clearest water of the year, with visibility often 25 m to 40 m. Outer Sea is more accessible on many days.

Plan Carefully: Surf season and peak rainfall can limit site choices and occasionally cancel trips. Stronger surface conditions make conservative dive planning and seasickness management important.

Different sources highlight slightly different "best" windows, with some local operators favoring March to July for calmer Inner Sea and others pointing to August to October for vis and blue water.

Ideal: Warm water and relatively consistent trade winds. Inner Sea often offers manageable chop and current, ideal for line training and relaxed depth sessions.

Plan Carefully: Dry and clear but swell and surf energy increase on exposed coasts, especially December to March, which can limit safe spots for freediving without a boat.

Because freediving infrastructure is lighter than scuba, it is wise to synchronize your trip with periods when a known instructor or school is offering courses.

Ideal: Calmer seas and clearer water at flagship beaches like Baia do Sancho, Baia dos Porcos and Porto. Tidal pools such as Atalaia are usually operating on regular schedules.

Plan Carefully: Heavier rain and runoff can reduce surface visibility, and swell occasionally closes access to ladders or trails. Book pool slots early to align with kinder tides and conditions.

For casual snorkelers, the key is calm entry conditions rather than absolute sunshine.

Ideal: Sunniest stretch of the year with short showers at most, ideal for hiking, scenic drives and long days on the beach.

Plan Carefully: More frequent rain and occasional muddy trails. Views can be atmospheric with clouds and dramatic seas, but factor in slippery paths and less predictable outdoor time.

If you care more about surf than snorkeling, lean into January and February.

Resident spinner dolphins use Baia dos Golfinhos as a daytime resting bay. Boats and guided hikes time visits for early morning when hundreds of dolphins may be seen resting or leaping offshore. Viewing is from cliffs or boats, not in water, but it is still one of Noronha's signature wildlife spectacles.

Richer plankton and baitfish pulses during the wetter months can bring more rays, schooling fish and sharks to Outer Sea pinnacles. Dives are more weather dependent, but the blue water can feel busier.
