Overview

World War II wrecks, Coral Triangle reefs, and Guadalcanal history within reach of the capital

Honiara is the Solomon Islands' most practical entry point and one of the Pacific's most atmospheric wreck-diving bases. The north coast of Guadalcanal faces Iron Bottom Sound, where ships, aircraft, and submarines from the Guadalcanal campaign now sit as reefs. Shore divers and snorkelers can reach the Bonegi wrecks from the beach, while Honiara day boats and liveaboards reach deeper war graves, aircraft wrecks, Tulagi reefs, and current-fed channels. This is not a polished resort strip. It is adventurous, history-heavy, cash-based, and best planned with local operators, guides, and respect for customary land and reef ownership. The reward is rare: serious WWII context above and below the water, warm Coral Triangle biodiversity, and flexible trip formats from a few local dive days to a full Solomon Islands liveaboard.

What Makes It Special

  • Wrecks within reach of town

Bonegi I, Bonegi II, Kyushu Maru, the B-17, the I-1 submarine, and selected deeper wrecks place major WWII sites within a realistic Honiara dive plan.

  • Snorkelable war history

A few coastal wrecks begin in very shallow water, so non-divers can see coral-covered WWII remains without committing to scuba.

  • Coral Triangle biodiversity

Artificial reefs and nearby natural reefs host hard corals, sea fans, anemones, reef fish, nudibranchs, jacks, fusiliers, turtles, and occasional sharks.

  • Hybrid planning

Use Honiara for a short land-based wreck module, or start a liveaboard that links Iron Bottom Sound with the Russell Islands, Florida Islands, and wider Solomon routes.
