Overview

Limestone cliffs above, Andaman reefs below: base in Ao Nang and Railay

Krabi's Ao Nang and Railay sit on Thailand's Andaman coast, framed by limestone karsts and close to the Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. From this base you can dive or snorkel the Phi Phi Islands' walls and reefs on easy day boats, then be back for sunset on Railay. Conditions are warm year-round, with the calmest seas and best visibility usually in the dry season from November to April. Krabi also works as a hub: add Koh Hong for lagoons, or transfer south to Koh Lanta for Koh Haa and advanced sites like Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. Above water, the region blends world-class rock climbing, mangrove kayaking, temples, and hot springs, so mixed groups can build a trip that keeps everyone busy.

What Makes It Special

  • Two-base flexibility

Stay in Ao Nang for logistics, or Railay for a car-free beach vibe, and move between them by longtail boat.

  • National park access

Easy day trips into Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and Than Bok Khorani National Park (Koh Hong).

  • Works for mixed groups

Divers can do Phi Phi day boats while non-divers climb, kayak mangroves, or hit hot springs, then regroup for sunset and street food.

  • Upgrade path

Use Krabi as a gateway to Koh Lanta for Koh Haa, and advanced Andaman pinnacles like Hin Daeng and Hin Muang in season.

Best time to go

November to April

Driest stretch, calmer seas, and more consistent visibility around 15 m to 25 m. Water often sits near 28°C to 30°C.

Main caution: Southwest monsoon can bring stronger winds around 20 km/h to 35 km/h, rougher crossings, and more rain. Some operators reduce schedules or switch to nearer islands.
