Overview

Mediterranean walls, coves, macro life, and easy marina logistics on Spain's Costa Tropical

La Herradura and Marina del Este are the Costa Tropical's most practical base for local diving, snorkeling, freediving training, and relaxed non-diver travel. The trip shape is simple: stay in La Herradura or Almunecar, drive or transfer from Malaga or Granada, then use Marina del Este and beach-based dive centers for Punta de la Mona, Los Berengueles, La Herradura Bay, and weather-permitting routes toward Maro-Cerro Gordo. Expect Mediterranean rocky reefs, walls, swim-throughs, orange and yellow invertebrate cover, octopus, morays, nudibranchs, bream, damselfish clouds, and occasional larger surprises offshore. The biggest planning variable is not remoteness, but conditions and protected-area rules. Summer brings warm water and crowds, spring and autumn give the best balance, and winter can be rewarding for trained local-style divers with proper thermal protection.

What Makes It Special

  • Compact dive logistics

Most dive days revolve around La Herradura beach, Los Berengueles, Punta de la Mona, and Marina del Este, so transfers, tanks, boat departures, and post-dive meals stay simple.

  • Protected Mediterranean cliffs

Maro-Cerro Gordo adds dramatic cliff scenery, coves, kayaking, and boat-access dive sites, but visitors must respect protected-area authorizations and no-take rules.

  • Mixed-level underwater options

Beginners can train in sheltered bay conditions, while certified divers can add walls, swim-throughs, deeper rocky reefs, and more exposed routes when weather cooperates.

  • Strong non-diver value

Non-divers can pair beach time with kayaking, Cerro Gordo viewpoints, Nerja Cave, Almunecar archaeology, marina dinners, and day trips toward Granada or the Sierra Nevada.

Best time to go

May to October, with the easiest balance in May, June, September, and October

Warm or warming water, more comfortable topside weather, generally easier sea planning, and fewer crowds than the July to August peak.

Main caution: Peak holiday weeks feel busier and book faster.
