Biodiversity capital of the Coral Triangle with manta highways and living reefs
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers sourced from research and local operating patterns.
November to April is the reliable window for manta cleaning activity and typically calmer seas. Plankton blooms can reduce visibility but fuel the action at Manta Ridge, Manta Sandy, and Misool seamounts. May and September are transition months with mixed winds. June to August often brings stronger southeast trades that can add chop to crossings, so focus on sheltered reefs in Dampier Strait if traveling mid-year.
Most travelers land at Sorong's SOQ, taxi to the harbor, then take the express fast ferry about 2 hours to Waisai. Resorts and homestays can arrange pickups at the Waisai pier. Some properties run direct speedboats from Sorong on request. Always match your inbound flight to the day's ferry schedule and book late-day flights out to buffer weather or fuel delays.
All visitors must purchase the Marine Park Entry Card. International visitors pay IDR 700,000 and Indonesian citizens a lower tariff; the card is valid for 12 months. The regency also collects a Visitor Entry Ticket that applies per location visited, commonly IDR 300,000 per person for a general Dive spot. Keep your card available for ranger checks at harbors, dive sites, and accommodations. Liveaboards require additional operating permits handled by the operator.
Advanced Open Water and recent drift experience are ideal. Currents can be medium to strong with downcurrent risk on saddles. Negative entries are common. Carry an SMB, whistle, torch for night dives, and a reef hook used only on bare rock when directed by guides. If you are newer, request easier sites and sheltered timings until you are comfortable.
Friwen Garden and village jetties like Yenbuba and Arborek are favorites for shallow coral gardens, soft-coral pilings, and schooling fish. Pick lee shores and time sessions around slack tide for the least current. Wear a full-sleeve top and booties for sun and stings, and always stay near a support boat with a bright float for visibility.
Yes. Waigeo offers access to both Red and Wilson's birds-of-paradise via guided pre-dawn hikes from villages like Saporkren. Expect steep, humid trails and bring headlamps, long sleeves, and water. Many dive resorts arrange a no-dive early morning trip between dive days, returning in time for a later boat run or a relaxed snorkel.
A chamber is listed in Waisai, but operational status can vary. Primary care is in Waisai and Sorong, with evacuations coordinated via your operator and DAN. Always dive conservatively, carry your insurance details, and confirm oxygen and comms on your boat. In any emergency, contact your operator and DAN, and be prepared to stage via Sorong for further care.
Most divers are comfortable in a 3mm to 5mm full suit year-round. Bring your personal computer, SMB, whistle, backup light, and spare o-rings. Photographers should pack redundant chargers and storage plus a surge-protected power strip. For snorkel and freedive days, a full-sleeve rashguard, booties, and a bright float improve safety and comfort.
Liveaboards efficiently link the north and Misool on one trip and reach remote sites with flexible timing. Resorts and homestays provide slower rhythms, repeat favorite sites, and more topside options like birds-of-paradise hikes and village visits. Many travelers do the north from a resort plus a separate Misool-focused liveaboard, or vice versa, across two trips.
Gloves are generally discouraged because they increase contact risk. Do not touch or feed wildlife, never stand on coral, use moorings instead of anchoring, and follow manta and turtle viewing distances. Some sites have strict user caps and time limits. Rangers will check permits at harbors and popular sites, and can close sensitive areas for protection.
