Getting Around

Waisai has taxis and charter cars. Island travel is by boat; fuel availability and weather dictate departures. There is no rideshare. Expect to charter boats for viewpoint trips or remote snorkel sites.

Entry Requirements

Most nationalities eligible for a 30-day Visa on Arrival or pre-arranged e-VOA. Apply via the official eVisa portal and complete the free electronic customs declaration before arrival. Passports must be valid for 6 months beyond entry and hold proof of onward travel.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Nitrox is widely available at major resorts and liveaboards. Bring a personal computer, SMB, whistle, torch, spare o-rings, and a 3-5 mm full suit. Airlines on domestic legs often include limited checked baggage; pre-purchase extra if carrying camera rigs. Rinse stations and camera rooms are common at dive lodges.

Practicalities

Currency

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)

Cash is king outside resorts. Larger resorts accept cards but expect intermittent connectivity. Carry small notes for village fees.

ATMs in Sorong and limited machines in Waisai; supply and connectivity vary. Withdraw before island transfers.

Electricity

230V 50Hz C, F

Power can be generator-based on smaller islands. Bring universal adapters and surge protection for camera gear.

Communications

Telkomsel offers the broadest coverage, but data can be slow or intermittent off Waisai. eSIMs may roam, yet local physical SIMs are more reliable. Expect dead zones in Misool and remote atolls.

Language

Bahasa Indonesia is widely spoken; Papuan languages are common in villages. Dive staff usually speak English.

Insurance

Carry dive and evacuation insurance valid for Indonesia. DAN and similar policies are strongly recommended given remote logistics.
