Safety And Conservation

Rangers enforce codes of conduct that limit users at sensitive sites, prohibit wildlife disturbance, and encourage moorings over anchors. Divers should be current-ready, deploy SMBs, and follow guides closely on saddles and channels.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Downcurrents on saddles
  • Secondary risk: Boat traffic and chop
  • Emergency contact: DAN Emergency Hotline (+62 21 5085 8719)
  • Safety overview: Rangers enforce codes of conduct that limit users at sensitive sites, prohibit wildlife disturbance, and encourage moorings over anchors.

Dive safety

  • Strong currents and occasional downcurrents occur at saddles and seamounts. Negative entries and reef hooks on bare rock may be used under guide direction.
  • Carry SMBs on all dives and use a whistle or mirror for signaling. Night dives under jetties demand good buoyancy and situational awareness.
  • Follow manta viewing rules: minimum distances, no chasing, and stay low on the bottom.
  • Confirm evacuation plans and oxygen carriage with your operator.

Basic clinics exist in Waisai and fuller facilities in Sorong. A hyperbaric facility is listed in Waisai; operational status and staffing can vary, so coordinate through your operator and DAN for any emergency. Evacuation may require boat plus flight staging from Sorong.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Downcurrents on saddles

Sites like Manta Ridge can flip from gentle to forceful; stay with the guide, carry an SMB, and hook only to bare rock if directed.

  • Boat traffic and chop

Use flags and SMBs. Windier months amplify surface risk around channels and ferry lanes.

  • Stings and scrapes

Wear full suits or rashguards and booties. Do not touch corals or wildlife.

Wildlife and protected areas

  • Marine Park rules prohibit coral damage, wildlife feeding or handling, and unpermitted fishing. Gloves are generally discouraged. Use moorings where provided.
  • Some manta and turtle sites have user caps and ranger supervision. Obey closures and briefings.
  • Park fees fund patrols, monitoring, and community programs across the MPA network.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when downcurrents on saddles. Confirm local briefings before committing.
