Overview

Ride the tides through the Tuamotus' most famous pelagic pass

Rangiroa is the French Polynesia atoll for divers who want current, blue water, and real pelagic suspense without needing a liveaboard. Most trips revolve around local day boats from Avatoru, Tiputa, or Ohotu, with dive centers timing Tiputa Pass and Avatoru Pass around the tide. The reward can be dolphins, gray reef sharks, silvertips, mantas, barracuda, jacks, turtles, and seasonal hammerheads. Non-divers still get a rich itinerary through the Blue Lagoon, the Aquarium, Reef Island, pearl farms, cycling, and Vin de Tahiti. Conditions are warm year-round, but May to October is the easiest overall window.

What Makes It Special

  • Tide-powered pelagic diving

Tiputa and Avatoru concentrate sharks, rays, dolphins, jacks, barracuda, turtles, and passing pelagics when current runs.

  • Strong non-diver appeal

Blue Lagoon, the Aquarium, Reef Island, pearl farms, cycling, and the atoll vineyard give non-divers a full itinerary.

  • Easy Tuamotu logistics

Rangiroa feels remote, but the domestic flight from Tahiti is about one hour and most transfers are handled by lodges or dive centers.

  • Warm water all year

Water commonly sits around 27°C to 29°C, with a dry-season planning advantage from May to October.
