Perpendicular Wall

Boat-access Christmas Island wall dive with clear water and blue-water exposure.

ScubaFreediveBoat EntryAdvanced
Wall
Local operator required

Local operator support is the normal access path because the site is a boat dive on an exposed island wall where sea state and current determine whether it is suitable.

Steep coral wall dive in very clear oceanic water, usually planned as a boat drop for divers comfortable with current and open-water edges.

About Perpendicular Wall

Perpendicular Wall is one of Christmas Island's classic drop-off dives, where a healthy reef edge gives way to a steep blue-water wall that falls quickly into deep ocean. The dive is less about covering distance and more about hanging on the reef lip, then working along the wall to watch the scene change from coral shelves and reef fish into open-water space. The site is best known for bright coral growth, clear water, and the chance of seeing larger visitors cruising the edge, including sharks, rays, and turtles moving through the blue. Because it is an offshore wall dive reached by boat and exposed to current, Perpendicular Wall is better suited to divers who are comfortable with open-water conditions than to complete beginners.

Local Intel For Perpendicular Wall

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

Most scuba dives follow the reef edge and wall contour, balancing time between coral-covered ledges and watching the blue for larger passing animals.

Freedive

Perpendicular Wall is not a casual freedive site because access is by boat and the appeal is the steep open-water wall rather than a sheltered shallow reef.

Snorkel

Perpendicular Wall is not a practical general snorkel site because the site is exposed, boat-accessed, and oriented around a drop-off rather than easy surface viewing.
