Sheltered shore-entry reef bay on Perhentian Besar, calm and beginner-friendly.
Romantic Beach is a sheltered bay on the western shore of Pulau Besar in the Perhentian Islands, where a fringing reef begins directly from the beach and slopes south over a rocky bottom. The site draws a mix of shore snorkelers and scuba divers for its accessible hard coral coverage, including branching, plate, and boulder coral formations, and the reef fish life that concentrates around them. The bay's protected orientation keeps current minimal and the entry gradual and straightforward, making it a natural fit for beginners and anyone looking for a calmer alternative to the busier Perhentian sites. Visibility varies with season and is generally lower than the more exposed Perhentian sites but adequate for reef exploration. The beach itself has no facilities, so divers should arrive self-sufficient and arrange return transport in advance.

Safety Notes
Boat traffic in the Perhentian Islands can be significant during peak season. Stay within marked swimming zones where present and use a surface marker buoy when ascending from depth. Check with local operators for current conditions before diving independently.
Access Restrictions
Romantic Beach is closed to all access from approximately November through March due to the northeast monsoon. Water taxis are the only means of access and may not operate outside the main tourist season or in rough weather.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Shore entry from the beach; entry is gradual over the reef flat. Follow the reef slope south over the rocky bottom. The site suits beginner and newly certified divers well given the shallow maximum depth and calm conditions. A torch is useful for checking crevices where lionfish and moray eels shelter. No current management needed under normal conditions.
Snorkeling
The reef begins from the shoreline, making this one of the more accessible snorkel sites on Perhentian Besar. Good coral coverage starts in very shallow water. Best snorkeling is over the reef sections rather than the sandy gaps. Morning light can improve visibility compared to afternoon, though tour group traffic is lower in the afternoon.
