Water-taxi-accessed lodge site in a protected bay opposite Picton, best treated as an easy marine-life and observatory stop rather than a technical Marlborough dive.

About Lochmara

Lochmara is a sheltered Inner Sounds dive built around a floating underwater observatory and nearby reef-restoration habitat rather than dramatic walls or wreck structure. It suits divers and marine-life watchers who want an easy, wildlife-focused look at Queen Charlotte Sound fish life, with kelp, reef edges, and resident species concentrated in a calm bay beside the lodge.

Lochmara Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Best Season

Lochmara is best when settled weather keeps the inner sound calm and access straightforward. Conditions are generally more forgiving here than at outer Marlborough sites, making it a flexible option for visitors based around Picton.

Typical Conditions

Expect a calm bay setting with kelp restoration, jetty and observatory structure, and typical inner-sound fish life rather than big-water exposure. This is more of an easy observation-focused site than a high-visibility or current-driven dive.

Safety & Access At Lochmara

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Safety Notes

Lochmara is one of the easier Marlborough Sounds dive environments, but divers still need to stay aware of limited visibility, jetty and boat activity, and the structure around the observatory. Maintain steady buoyancy around kelp and the viewing platform, and follow the lodge or skipper briefing for entry and exit procedures.

Access Restrictions

Lochmara has no road access. Most visitors arrive by scheduled water transfer from Picton, private boat, or by walking in from the Queen Charlotte Track.
