Bay of Islands cave dive with a booming entrance and surge-prone mouth

Sonic Boom Cave is a Bay of Islands cave stop usually reached on the same boat dive as a nearby site and approached by a short swim. Its narrow entrance and overhead chamber turn incoming swell into the booming sound that gives the site its name, so calm conditions matter. Inside, the cave feels compact and atmospheric, with blue maomao, paua, gem nudibranchs, snapper, and wrasse around the entrance and reef edge.
