Madeira dive-site listing with Garajau reserve context, tunnel depths, and reserve fish-life description.
Arena
Garajau amphitheatre reef with tunnel features and dense fish life.
About Arena
Arena is a Garajau marine-reserve reef in Madeira shaped by stacked rock formations that create a natural amphitheatre, a short tunnel, and a vertical chimney feature. The dive feels scenic rather than technical, with sandy patches around the reef adding contrast to the volcanic structure and giving divers room to circle the formation slowly. Fish life is the main draw here. Barracudas, trumpetfish, groupers, morays, rays, and other Atlantic reef species are repeatedly mentioned around the site, with schooling fish moving above the structure while crustaceans and other smaller life hide in the rock. It is one of those Madeira dives where the terrain and the reserve-protected fish density do most of the work.

Arena Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
10m - 24m
Depth Note
Public descriptions place the main reef route roughly in the 5-25 m range, with a tunnel whose upper section is around 7 m and lower section around 16 m; some directory copy describes the broader site as reaching about 24-30 m.
Typical Conditions
Usually dived as a scenic Garajau reserve reef with volcanic rock, sand patches, schooling fish, and enough current at times to keep the outside of the formation more interesting than a fully sheltered training site.
Safety & Access At Arena
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Arena is still a straightforward recreational dive, but treat the tunnel and chimney as optional overhead features, monitor current around the outside of the reef, and keep the group tidy during ascent in the reserve.
Access Restrictions
Arena is best treated as a guided Garajau reserve dive with access coordinated through local operators rather than a fully independent self-guided site.
Local Intel For Arena
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
Diving depths range from 10 to 24 m.
Freedive
Arena can appeal to strong freedivers because the upper reef and tunnel area start fairly shallow, but it is better known as a scuba reserve dive than as a dedicated freedive line site.
Snorkel
Confident snorkelers may enjoy the reserve setting in calm conditions, but Arena's real appeal is below the surface around the tunnel, chimney, and deeper reef structure.
