Long Beach Simon's Town is a sheltered harbor shore dive with a sand bottom, scattered wreckage and reef patches close to the station. It is one of the better Cape Town training sites because the entry is straightforward, the bottom is easy to read and the site stays usable when more exposed False Bay spots are blown out. Expect a relaxed, beginner-friendly dive with mixed sand-and-reef scenery rather than dramatic topography. The planning variables are visibility, occasional naval closures and the fact that an easy site can still turn chilly and green after weather changes.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
0m - 18m
Depth Note
The bottom shelves from the shore to about 18 m at the harbour mouth, with roughly 5 m close inshore.
Best Season
year round, with clear summer spells and winter visibility advantages
Typical Conditions
Well protected from most winds and waves due to the harbour shape, but visibility swings seasonally.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Box jellyfish may be present, so exposure protection is sensible. The site can close for naval traffic, and visibility can be patchy.
Access Restrictions
Permit required inside the MPA; the site may close when foreign warships are in Simon's Town.
Legal Notes
Long Beach sits in Simon's Town harbour area and access is subject to marine management and port control.

Scuba Diving
An easy shore dive with a sand bottom, scattered wreckage and reef patches; excellent for skills practice and relaxed exploration.
Freediving
Works best as controlled shallow practice rather than a long breath-hold route.
Snorkeling
Good for short, calm snorkel sessions when the water is clear enough, though the site is primarily valued by divers.
