Shallow Zanzibar reef with plate coral, clear water, and tide-aware boat access.
Haji is a northeast-coast Zanzibar reef dive with a shallow top, plate and cabbage coral, and a short tide-sensitive crossing from Kichafi into a reef that stays friendly for most divers. The site is boat-based, but it rewards relaxed reef exploration with green turtles, octopus, leaffish, scorpionfish, nudibranchs, and clear water on the right day.

Depth Note
The reef is commonly described as running from 10-18 m along the northeast coast.
Best Season
Year-round
Typical Conditions
A shallow fringing reef with plate and hard/soft corals, a natural arch, and generally good visibility; tide timing matters for the short crossing from Kichafi.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Keep the guide's tide timing in view, because the crossing from Kichafi can change with the water movement. The reef itself is gentle, but the boat plan should still be followed.
Access Restrictions
Haji is typically handled as part of the east-coast boat circuit, with the short Kichafi-to-Haji swim timed to the tide.
Legal Notes
Use the operator's tide window and local reef sequence rather than treating Haji as a standalone shore entry.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
A relaxed multilevel reef dive with coral cover, a shallow profile, and enough structure to stay interesting across the reef top.
Freediving
Possible on the shallow reef edge, but scuba is the better default because the full coral garden sits beyond simple surface viewing.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is limited to the shallow edges; the main reef is better appreciated on a guided scuba dive.
