Overview

Wrecks, reef passages and village lagoons in the wild west of the Solomons

Gizo and Western Province are the Solomon Islands at their most cinematic: WWII aircraft in clear lagoons, the Toa Maru wreck near Gizo, sharky walls at Munda and Uepi, and rainforest islands where boat transfers double as wildlife watching. The trip is usually built from land-based hubs such as Gizo, Munda or Uepi Island Resort, but liveaboards also route through Western Province, so it works as a hybrid destination. Expect remote logistics, cash-heavy travel, warm water, local reef ownership and highly skilled operators rather than a resort strip. The best broad window is May to October for drier, more comfortable weather, while diving itself is credible year-round when boats can run.

What Makes It Special

  • WWII wreck density

Gizo combines a major freighter wreck with shallow aircraft wrecks that work for divers, snorkelers and photographers.

  • Reef passage energy

Grand Central Station, Shark Point and Uepi Point sit where currents feed walls, fish schools, sea fans and reef sharks.

  • Hybrid trip design

Land-based operators make Gizo, Munda and Uepi strong stand-alone bases, while liveaboards can stitch Western Province into broader Solomon Islands itineraries.

  • Non-diver depth

Kennedy Island, Skull Island, Kolombangara, Tetepare, markets, kayaking and cultural visits give companions real choices beyond the dive boat.

Best time to go

May to October

Drier, more comfortable island weather, warm water around 28°C to 30°C and the best balance for diving, snorkeling, trekking and transfers.

Main caution: Wetseason warmth and humidity, quickmoving rain at times, possible storm disruption and a greater need for schedule buffers.
