- Safety overview: Maui’s best days come from conservative planning: early starts, reeffriendly habits, and respect for MLCD rules.
Dive safety
Pick sites for the day’s wind and swell. Favor first-light entries to avoid trades. Carry an SMB and audible device for drift risk near boat lanes. At Molokini’s back wall, stay with guides and watch current. Avoid solo freediving and use flags on shore sessions. Winter surf can make West and North Maui unsafe for snorkeling.
Dial 911 for emergencies. Divers should contact DAN’s 24/7 hotline at +1-919-684-9111. The University of Hawaii Hyperbaric Treatment Center in Honolulu provides 24/7 emergency hyperbaric care; Maui is remote from a chamber, so early consultation and oxygen first aid matter.
Snorkel and freedive safety
Back Wall Exposure
Molokini’s outside back wall is for advanced divers with potential current and bluewater conditions. Use moorings and follow guide instructions.
Winter North Swell
West and north exposures can become unsafe for snorkeling and shore entries during winter surf events. Follow lifeguard advice and forecasts.
Jellyfish and Man-of-war
Box jellies pulse 8-10 days after the full moon and Portuguese man-of-war can blow in on trades. Wear rashguards and check advisories.
Wildlife and protected areas
Use mineral-only sunscreens or UPF clothing. Do not touch or chase wildlife. Respect corals and avoid standing on reef. Follow no-take rules in MLCDs like Molokini and Honolua. Keep {{ 100 | distnace:m }} from humpbacks and {{ 50 | distnace:m }} from dolphins and turtles per NOAA guidance.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when back wall exposure. Confirm local briefings before committing.
