Warm Pacific, iconic Molokini, and whale season magic
Currently Viewing:
Overview
Maui blends easy shore entries with world-class boat dives. The crescent of Molokini Crater offers clear water, while Makena lava tubes and Lahaina reefs deliver turtles and macro. From December to April the Maui Nui Basin fills with migrating humpback whales. Rules matter: mineral-only sunscreen in Maui County, 100-yard whale approach limits, and no-take zones at Molokini and Honolua. It adds up to great visibility, abundant marine life, and responsible access for scuba, freedive, and snorkeling.
Trip callouts
Molokini’s protected crescent often has visibility that rewards wide-angle shooting.
Turtles, reef sharks, endemic reef fish, plus seasonal humpbacks in the Maui Nui sanctuary.
No-take MLCDs, mooring use, and mineral-only sunscreen reduce diver footprint.

scuba
Why Maui for Scuba Diving
South Maui makes dawn runs to Molokini easy and offers lava-tube shore dives in Makena. West Maui adds Mala Wharf’s collapsed pier ecology and short boat hops to Lanai’s Cathedrals when seas allow. Reputable outfits include Maui Dreams Dive Co in Kihei and Maui Dive Shop out of Maalaea. Expect turtles, endemic fish, and seasonal whale song on deeper dives.
freedive
Why Maui for Freediving
Clear mornings and easy access make South Maui the freedive hub. Makena Landing and Ulua offer gentle entries for line training on calm days, while boat trips to Molokini serve advanced sessions when currents allow. Respect marine life and sanctuary rules during whale season.
snorkel
Why Maui for Snorkeling
New snorkelers love South and West Maui’s protected coves. Black Rock, Kahekili, Ulua, and Turtle Town provide easy beach access, while boats reach Molokini’s clear water. Choose mornings for calmer seas and visibility, and always follow mineral-only sunscreen rules.

When you are not in the water
Chase sunrise at Haleakala, drive the Hana coast waterfalls, walk Iao Valley, and visit Maui Ocean Center. Plan reservations for sunrise and state parks, and consider a ferry day trip to Lanai for coastal hikes and beaches.
