Overview
Sheltered Coral Triangle reefs, volcano slopes, and easy boat logistics
The Togeans sit in Sulawesi's calm Gulf of Tomini, with warm water near 28°C, typical 20 m to 40 m visibility, and mostly gentle currents. Divers spread across Kadidiri, Malenge, Bomba, and Una Una, while Buka Buka Island near Ampana offers a low-friction base for fast transfers. Much of the area lies in Kepulauan Togean National Park with clear conservation rules. UNESCO recognized the wider Togean–Tojo Una Una Biosphere Reserve in 2019.
Everything you should know
Where you are
A necklace of islands and reefs inside Tomini Gulf creates consistently manageable sea states. The park protects barrier, fringing, and atoll reefs, mangroves, rainforest, and a rare jellyfish lake at Mariona.
Why divers love it
- Variety: From Una Una’s volcanic seamounts and walls to Bomba’s drop-offs and Malenge’s clear shallows.
- Logistics: Public speedboats, resort launches, and short inter-island hops make flexible itineraries. Buka Buka’s proximity to Ampana simplifies arrival days.
Conservation baseline
Park entry tickets are required when entering Togean waters. Follow no-touch, no-take practices, avoid anchoring on coral, and follow jellyfish lake rules.
Trip callouts

Why the Togeans for Freediving
Shallow caps spilling into blue, generally mild currents, and frequent glassy mornings create easy line and exploration sessions. Choose leeward bays for the calmest surface conditions.

Why the Togeans for Snorkeling
Reef tops start in 1 m to 3 m over bommies with turtles and anthias clouds. Day boats reach lagoon sandbars, Pulau Papan’s bridge, and the fin-free jellyfish lake at Mariona.

What to do when you are not in the water
Walk the long footbridge to the Bajau village at Pulau Papan, kayak mangroves, picnic on lagoon sandbars, or hike Una Una’s Colo cone on dry-season days. Expect simple island shops and generator or solar rhythms.
