About Gamat Bay
Gamat Bay is a coral-rich site on the west side of Nusa Penida, where a relatively shallow and sheltered bay opens into a series of descending slopes and terraces that lead toward a deeper wall and the channel between Penida and Ceningan. The upper sections of the bay are generally calm and accessible, with good coral coverage and high reef fish density, while the outer areas become progressively deeper and more exposed to current. This transition creates a varied dive profile, with macro life, reef fish, turtles, rays, and seasonal mola mola all possible depending on depth and conditions. However, currents can change quickly, and if the timing is not appropriate, downward currents may be encountered as water moves toward the channel. For this reason, dives are best planned carefully, often making use of the more protected sections of the bay and progressively exploring outward only when conditions allow.

Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
The site transitions from shallow reef to a slope descending beyond 40 m, suiting deeper scuba profiles.
Freedive
Freediving is best kept inside the sheltered bay in calm conditions; the outer exit can turn current-led quickly.
Snorkel
Snorkeling is best kept inside the bay in calm conditions. Strong current outside the bay can quickly push snorkelers out, so fins and a condition check matter.
