Hand Deeps is an offshore Cornish pinnacle reef with anemone-covered walls, gullies, and drop-offs that make it one of Plymouth's signature scenic dives. The site rewards careful tide planning, strong buoyancy, and a boat-based run, but the payoff is rich temperate life and a big, dramatic underwater profile. A good skipper and a slack-water window make the reef much easier to read and enjoy.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
7m - 55m
Depth Note
Five pinnacles rise from a 55 m seabed, with the best walls and drop-offs around the mid-teens to mid-30s and the central pinnacle topping out near 7 m.
Best Season
Year-round, with neap tides and settled weather preferred.
Typical Conditions
Offshore pinnacle and wall diving with strong tidal currents, good visibility offshore, and abundant temperate reef life.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Plan around slack water, carry enough gas for the drop-offs and return, and be ready to abort if current or visibility shifts.
Access Restrictions
Boat access is the norm, and slack water on neaps is the safest window; spring tides are more demanding.
Legal Notes
Follow charter instructions and local tide tables for the offshore run.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Boat-based pinnacle and wall dive with multiple pinnacles, gullies, and drop-offs that suit experienced scuba planning.
Freediving
Not a freedive-first site; offshore depth and strong current make scuba the better fit.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is not practical because the best structure sits offshore and deeper.
