Fairy Bower is a shallow shore dive in Cabbage Tree Bay where the draw is a gentle reef slope, ledges, swim-throughs, and a very rich temperate fish community. It works best as a slow macro or photographic dive from the Bower Lane steps when swell is calm enough to keep the entry comfortable.
Conservative baseline from public research. No community dives logged yet.
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
2m - 12m
Depth Note
The Bower Lane steps lead into a rocky, kelpy shoreline; close inshore can be as shallow as 2m at low tide, with the main sandy and ledge profile around 6-7m and directory listings rounding the site to about 12m max.
Best Season
October to March
Typical Conditions
Shallow reserve reef with boulders, kelp, and sand pockets; best on calm mornings when the steps and rock entry are manageable.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Take the steps and rock entry slowly, keep clear of the boulder line, and stay patient in the kelp and gutters.
Access Restrictions
Shore entry from the Bower Lane steps; parking is difficult and the entry gets less comfortable when swell picks up.
Legal Notes
Follow Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve no-take rules and respect the marine-life protection restrictions.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
A slow macro or photographic dive works best, with plenty of fish life in the ledges, boulders, and sand pockets.
Freediving
A calm-day freedive is plausible in the shallows, but the site is mainly a shore scuba and snorkel destination.
Snorkeling
Very good snorkel fit on calm days because the access is simple and the reserve is loaded with visible life.
