About Lion de Mer
Lion de Mer is a boat-reached rock dive off Saint-Raphaël that combines easy statue dives, a natural arch, cave-like relief and a deeper coralligenous wall. The site works for a wide range of levels because the shallow statue area gives an easier entry point while the south side adds more dramatic structure and marine interest for repeat visits. It is one of the region's signature Mediterranean dives, with corals, gorgonians and a mix of rocky, sandy and archaeological features.

Safety & Access At Lion de Mer
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Use a controlled descent, keep buoyancy tight around the arch and wall, and treat the deeper sections as a proper boat-dive day rather than a casual shore outing.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only. Use local dive support and plan more carefully on windy days when the wall side can feel livelier.
Legal Notes
Follow local club briefings, stay within your certification level and treat arches and cave-like sections conservatively.

Scuba Diving
The statues are the easiest part of the site, while the arch and south wall give more structure for novice through advanced divers. The site is best treated as a boat dive with multiple lines rather than a single quick pass.
Freediving
Not a freedive-first site. The interesting features sit deep enough that scuba is the right fit, and the overhead sections should only be approached with proper training.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is not the main use case. The site is far better for scuba, with the best features sitting beyond comfortable snorkel range.
