Operator guide describing Thoondu and One Palm as the main north-east thresher cleaning-station sites, with cleaning stations in recreational depths and dry-season visibility emphasis.
Thoondu
North-point wall and blue-water reef with thresher shark passes.
Local operator required
Thoondu is a current-sensitive boat dive on the north-east tip of Fuvahmulah. Local operators decide whether to run it based on sea state and brief divers on current management and cleaning-station etiquette.
About Thoondu
Thoondu is an exposed north-point reef and wall dive off Fuvahmulah, starting on a fringing reef before peeling into blue water. The site is best known for thresher shark cleaning-station passes, with barracuda, giant trevally, groupers, and snappers around the reef and seasonal chances of oceanic mantas, whale sharks, hammerheads, and mola mola. It feels more current-sensitive than the island's easier reefs and is usually planned as a guided boat dive when sea state allows.

Thoondu Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
5m - 30m
Depth Note
The top reef starts around 5-7 m, a common working band sits around 18-30 m, and the wall keeps dropping into blue water beyond the usual recreational profile. The main thresher cleaning-station plan is generally run inside the Maldives 30 m recreational limit.
Best Season
Dived year-round, with the clearest and calmest conditions usually in the dry season from December to April. March to May is especially strong for oceanic manta activity, while June to September can be windier with rougher seas and softer visibility.
Typical Conditions
An exposed north-point reef and wall that starts shallow and rolls into blue water. Expect warm water, blue-water pelagic passes, and medium to strong current that can build into drifty, vortexy conditions.
Safety & Access At Thoondu
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Treat Thoondu as a guided blue-water pelagic dive: stay tight to the briefing, keep good buoyancy over the reef edge, manage separation early, and give cleaning-station wildlife plenty of space.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only. Operators run Thoondu when weather and sea state allow and expect divers to be comfortable with blue water and current management.
Legal Notes
Thoondu sits within the Fuvahmulah Biosphere Reserve, and the Thundi area on the island's north point is a protected marine-coastal area. Follow local conservation rules and guide briefings.

Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
A wall dive with an overhang and a cleaning station that can attract pelagic species.
Freedive
Not a routine casual freedive spot. The attraction is a current-sensitive outer-reef profile with pelagic action around deeper cleaning-station terrain, so it only makes sense with a boat, dedicated safety cover, and strong blue-water experience.
Snorkel
Not a good casual snorkel entry. Thoondu's main action happens off the outer reef, and the exposed north point can have strong wave and current energy even when the surface looks manageable from shore.
