Horseshoe Reef is a shallow offshore patch-reef system off Key Largo, just north of the Christ of the Abyss area, arranged in a horseshoe shape and usually dived by boat. The site mixes coral heads, sand gaps, and a couple of swim-throughs, so it rewards a slow reef tour rather than a straight drift. It is known for elkhorn coral and steady reef life, with regular sightings of sharks, rays, turtles, barracuda, and Caribbean fish.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
2m - 11m
Depth Note
Published ranges vary from roughly 12-26 ft on operator pages to about 5-35 ft on state materials; I normalized to the broad shallow-reef band.
Typical Conditions
Shallow reef with changing visibility and usually manageable movement on fair-weather days; the ride and surface chop worsen when wind builds.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Keep buoyancy tight over coral heads and swim-throughs, use moorings instead of anchoring, and treat wind and swell as the main comfort limiters.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only; plan on a charter or guided trip from Key Largo.
Legal Notes
Inside Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary; use buoyed tie-up points where available and avoid anchoring on reef.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Boat dive with a shallow profile over patch reefs, coral heads, and sand edges. The route suits slow reef tours and buoyancy practice more than long drifts.
Snorkeling
Good snorkeling on calm days in the shallowest sections, especially near coral heads and sandy edges where the fish life concentrates.
