Can you snorkel at Gorgonias?

The protected bay can work for snorkeling on calm days, but the site is more rewarding once you follow the slope deeper.

How do you reach Gorgonias?

You walk in from Los Cancajos beach; parking and beach services are close by, and the route starts from the shoreline rather than a boat.

How does current affect Gorgonias?

Current is usually mild, but wind and wave direction can make the surface more lively, especially during windier periods.

Is Gorgonias good for beginners?

The wider Los Cancajos area is beginner-friendly, but Gorgonias itself is a deeper shore dive, so it is better for confident beginners with good buoyancy or for intermediate divers.

What is visibility like at Gorgonias?

Typical visibility is around 20-25 m, with calmer days usually giving the clearest water.

What makes Gorgonias different from other La Palma dives?

The red gorgonian fields and black-coral sections are the headline, and the return through the shallow lava labyrinth gives it a very distinct volcanic feel.

What marine life is common at Gorgonias?

Rays, octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels, scorpionfish, nudibranchs, parrotfish, wrasse, and schooling fish are all common themes.

What should divers watch for at Gorgonias?

Take care on the volcanic entry, keep an eye on surface chop, and plan enough gas for the return through the shallow labyrinth.

About Gorgonias

Gorgonias is a shore-accessed Los Cancajos dive on La Palma's east coast, starting on a gentle volcanic slope that drops into red gorgonians and black coral before you work back through the shallow lava labyrinth. The bay is sheltered and easy to organize, but the route still rewards careful buoyancy and normal shore-entry care through volcanic terrain.

Safety & Access

Safety Notes

Watch footing on volcanic entry points, keep an eye on the surface in windier periods, and leave enough gas for the return through the lava labyrinth.

Access Restrictions

Best entered when the bay is calm enough for the stone-beach approach; the shallow lava labyrinth and volcanic footing need attention on entry and exit.

Legal Notes

Los Cancajos is managed as an eco-sport zone, so follow local access and conservation rules.
