Hellenistic Port is a shallow Vis harbour dive with yellow sponges.
Hellenistic Port is a shallow Vis harbour dive with yellow sponges.
Hellenistic Port is a shore-access archaeological dive in front of Hotel Issa on Vis, where an ancient harbour sits under a concrete quay, a yellow-sponge slope, and a shallow plain that opens into the bay. The site works well as an easy daytime dive or a night dive, because the harbor remains hold sponges, amphorae, groupers, scorpionfish, octopus, conger eels, squid, and other Adriatic life without needing a long boat ride. Divers should treat it as a relaxed harbour exploration with careful shore entry and good surface awareness rather than as a deep wreck or drift dive.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
1.5m - 10m
Depth Note
The quay entry stays shallower than 1.5 m, the north slope changes into a sandy plain at about 6 m, and the south slope reaches about 10 m before the bay opens out.
Best Season
Year-round; winter usually has the calmest water and the clearest visibility.
Typical Conditions
Sheltered bay water, a shallow harbor slope, yellow sponges, and calm conditions that suit easy daytime dives and night dives.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Use the quay entry carefully, keep clear of harbor traffic, and treat the site as a relaxed shore dive with better rewards at night than on a rushed daytime descent.
Access Restrictions
Coordinate with local harbor rules and keep the quay clear during entries and exits.
Legal Notes
Follow hotel, marina, and local harbor rules when entering from the quay.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
A shallow harbour dive with yellow sponges and a deeper slope that rewards relaxed daytime or night dives.
Freediving
Not a primary freedive site; the shallow entry can work in calm conditions, but the harbor slope is better suited to scuba and snorkel.
Snorkeling
The shallow quay and sponge slope make snorkeling possible, but the most active nocturnal life is usually better seen by divers after dark.
